Breaking Barriers and Empowering Communities

Being a leader in today’s world, especially in tech, isn’t about seeking recognition or accolades—it’s about having the courage to face the barriers that continue to hold people back. As someone who once faced those very same obstacles, I understand firsthand what it means to be excluded and overlooked. That’s why I’ve chosen to be a fearless leader, one who isn’t afraid to knock down the walls that prevent progress for both individuals and entire communities.

In the Business of Saving Lives

I am in the business of saving lives. If it weren’t for the fearless leaders who came before me, opening doors and creating opportunities, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today. Their leadership, their courage, and their willingness to break barriers saved my life. And now, it’s my turn to carry that torch forward, leading with the same fearlessness that inspired me and gave me the chance to thrive.

I don’t just lead for myself—I lead for those who are walking the path behind me. I do this work because I believe that real leadership is about making sure that the next generation has more opportunities, fewer barriers, and a clearer path to success than I did. I will continue to lead in honor of the executives and leaders whose legacies opened doors for me, and in doing so, I will help others overcome their own challenges.

Breaking Barriers, Not for the Spotlight, but for Change

Leadership for me isn’t glamorous—it’s about confronting the tough realities that many choose to ignore. Barriers still exist, whether they’re in the form of systemic inequalities, lack of access, or outdated mindsets that limit opportunities for those in inner cities and disadvantaged communities. I lead not because I seek recognition, but because I’ve been anointed and ordained to take on this mission.

I can talk the talk because I actually walk the walk.I’m constantly speaking with individuals in the community, engaging in intentional conversations, and listening to those who are often unheard. It’s in these spaces—away from the spotlight—where the real work happens. The barriers in our way are persistent, and it’s through these genuine connections that I understand what needs to be broken down.

Fearless Leadership Means Challenging the Status Quo

For far too long, those in positions of power have been out of touch with the realities of underserved communities, especially in inner cities. They remain disconnected from the struggles happening on the ground, behind the scenes, and in the spaces where real change is needed. I refuse to stand by and let that continue.

Fearless leadership means challenging the status quo, not being afraid to disrupt the systems that create barriers in the first place. I know firsthand that executives either love me or hate me, and that depends entirely on the systems they’re building and how intentional they are in their efforts toward inclusion. If they’re committed to building equitable, inclusive environments, I’m their greatest advocate. But if their systems create more obstacles, I’m not afraid to call it out.

This isn’t about picking sides; it’s about standing up for what’s right. It’s about making sure that the systems we build either uplift communities or face the necessary changes to ensure they do. Leadership means staying committed to inclusion at every level—whether it’s popular or not.

Anointed to Lead, Fearless in Breaking Barriers

I didn’t choose leadership for the recognition. I was anointed to do this work, and with that comes a responsibility to fearlessly confront the obstacles in front of us. I don’t shy away from hard conversations or uncomfortable truths. I don’t back down when the barriers seem overwhelming. I lead because it’s my purpose to break these barriers down—not just for myself, but for everyone who has ever been held back by them.

And I do it because fearless leaders saved my life. I am standing here today because others chose to break barriers before me, and it’s my mission to carry on their legacy. Every barrier I knock down is another life saved, another door opened, and another opportunity created for those who come next.

Fearless Leadership: The Road Ahead

The road ahead is full of challenges, but that’s exactly why fearless leadership is necessary. It’s about more than just talking about diversity and inclusion—it’s about taking action to break down the barriers that keep these concepts from becoming reality.

I will continue to lead fearlessly, breaking through every obstacle that stands in the way of progress, equity, and opportunity. Whether you’re from an inner city, working behind the scenes, or fighting your own battles to get ahead, know that I’m here to confront these challenges alongside you.

Together, we can create a future where leadership isn’t about who is seen or celebrated—it’s about who is willing to fight for change, push through the barriers, and open doors for others. That’s the leadership I believe in, and that’s the path I will continue to walk.

Let’s continue to break barriers, honor the fearless leaders who came before us, and save lives for generations to come.

From a FEARLESS leader,

Desiah Barnett
